I know I may sound like a broken record — how many times can I highlight the importance of connection, community, and relationships in building your online presence?!
A few weeks ago, I was chatting with Candice Van Dertholen on our LinkedIn Live, and I remember saying to her, "I wish I could count the number of times you've said the word 'connection' during our conversation."
We both laughed, but the truth is, we both talk about connection constantly, and there's a reason for that. In today's fragmented and often overwhelming world, meaningful connection is what people crave most.

Beyond Algorithms: Building Genuine Connection in the Digital Space
While Candice and I focused on holistic practitioners specifically, these questions about social media apply to all businesses: Is it in decline or just getting started?! Which platform should I be on? What should I say? What should I do?
So many questions and concerns! And for good reason: The old way of doing social media — chasing algorithms, constant self-promotion and sales messages, and focusing on vanity metrics — was never a recipe for genuine connection, and now, it's simply not a sustainable way to build a brand online.
The truth is, people are overwhelmed by the constant barrage of sales messages disguised as social media content. You know the ones - where every post is a promotion, every story a sales pitch.
It's exhausting!
And more than that, it leaves people craving something more authentic, more meaningful. They're looking for connection, for community, for a sense of belonging in the digital space.
So, instead of constantly promoting your products or services, consider shifting your focus:
Share valuable content: A lot of it, for free! Provide helpful information, insights, and resources that your audience will genuinely appreciate. This demonstrates your skillset and the value you bring to your clients, establishing yourself as an expert in your field.
Engage in genuine conversations: Social media is a two-way street. Listen to your audience, respond authentically to their questions and comments, and participate in relevant discussions.
Build a community: Create a welcoming and interactive online space where your followers feel a sense of belonging. Encourage interaction, offer support, and foster a shared sense of purpose.
Prioritizing relationships might seem counterintuitive in a world obsessed with algorithms and quick wins, but trust me, the impact is real.
And the benefits? Well, they speak for themselves...
Enhanced Credibility: When you consistently offer value, you establish trust and authority, positioning yourself as a go-to resource in your field.
Stronger Client Relationships: Nurturing genuine connections online can turn followers into loyal clients, fostering trust in your expertise and attracting referrals within their networks.
Targeted Marketing: Engaging with your ideal client online helps you understand their needs, desires, and pain points. This allows you to tailor your messaging and connect with those potential clients in a more genuine and impactful way.
Enhanced Visibility as a Thought Leader: When you prioritize genuine engagement and valuable contributions to your online community, your expertise shines through. This naturally increases your visibility among potential clients actively seeking solutions and positions you as a trusted voice in your field.
Social media is still incredibly powerful, especially for consultants who leverage it strategically. When you shift your focus from promotion to building relationships, you can cultivate a loyal community of clients and colleagues who trust and appreciate your skill set, which in turn becomes a powerful source of referrals and ongoing support.
